Why is the butterfly considered a "logo" for ADHD?

The butterfly logo often used for ADHD is embraced by many, but some people associate a negative connotation with it. Logos can be interpreted in multiple ways, and most designers (a.k.a. concept ideators) don’t intend harm. It’s important to consider diverse perspectives and engage respectfully, recognizing that visuals may be read through different lived experiences.

Many people with ADHD advocate for minimizing labels and avoiding visuals that might misrepresent their experiences, especially for those who struggle to express themselves. At the same time, some individuals are proud to identify with an ADHD brain and celebrate the creativity, energy, and unique perspectives it brings.

Why is a squirrel affiliated with ADHD?

The core of the metaphor is simple: a squirrel darting around outside can be a distracting, attention-grabbing image. That’s why the symbol sticks. It captures the everyday experience many people with ADHD describe: their attention can jump to external stimuli quickly, even in the middle of a task.

The metaphor is handy because it’s vivid and easy to understand, but it’s also a simplification and not representative of all presentations of ADHD.

A growing resource for ADHD.
